Second formerly conjoined twin goes home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — For the first time since December 2014, Carter Mirabal left Wolfson Children’s Hospital to head home.

“It’s a blessing, man, a long time coming,” said his father, Bryan Mirabal.

Carter was born a conjoined twin with his brother Connor.

The two underwent a separation surgery last May and have continued to get stronger ever since.

Connor was strong enough to go home in January, but Carter stayed in longer for extra medical care.

The boys’ aunt, Jasmine Mirabal, says they only recently learned Carter was being released.

“We just found out maybe four or five days ago that he was coming home so – and it was that first time we've heard anything about him coming home so it was just, like ‘He’s coming home, and it was for sure and it was happening and now here we are,” said Jasmine.

Not only is it perfect timing because this weekend is Mother’s Day but also because they are celebrating a milestone.

“It's been more of a blessing than anything else. I think it's kind of a coincidence that he gets to go home today and tomorrow has been one year since the separation. So, I think that's pretty awesome,” said Jasmine.

The twins were loaded into an SUV side by side and taken home, where they’ll learn to adjust to their new normal.
