3 schools planned for St. Johns County to ease overcrowding

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — New schools will be built in St. Johns County to help ease overcrowding.

The number of students in the county has grown by over 10,000 in the last 10 years. The increase has the district using portables at some schools.

Earlier this year voters approved a half-cent sales tax to help fund new schools, and two of the three schools will be paid for using that tax revenue.

The three schools that are planned to built in north St. Johns County, where most of the growth and development is happening. The plans include a K-eighth grade school in Aberdeen and in Nocatee, and an elementary school in World Golf Village.

Construction for the three new schools is set to begin in May with a completion hopeful for the start of the 2017-2018 school year.  An expansion project for Nease High School will also be going on during the same time.

The district has added 70 new portable classrooms to handle the overcrowding next year, which costs around $4 million.
