4-car collision leaves one dead, FHP says

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol said one person is dead following a four-car crash in Clay County.

Nathan T. Schmidt, 23, of Orange Park, died of his injuries at Orange Park Medical Center.

Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash on Jefferson Avenue at 8:01 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers say the 20-year-old driver of a 2002 Ford Explorer traveling south in the outside lane of Jefferson Ave struck Schmidt's stationary vehicle located in the outside travel lane from behind, causing a chain-reaction crash involving two other stationary cars.

FHP said this is an ongoing investigation and charges are pending. The occupants of the other vehicles, including the driver of the Ford Explorer had minor to no injures.
