Action News Jax gives Coast Guard life jacket from Bahamas believed to be from El Faro

During Action News Jax's trip to the Bahamas, a local gave our crew a life jacket he found that is believed to be from El Faro.

Bahamian Dwight Hart found the partial life preserver near Great Exuma.

“A life preserver with what is evidently looks like some type of shark bite marks you can see the indentation here and here,” Hart said.

The National Transportation Safety Board asked our Action News Jax crew to bring it back to the United States from the Bahamas and hand it over to the Coast Guard.

Tuesday afternoon Action News Jax Lorena Inclan met with the Coast Guard in Jacksonville. They brought Inclan into one of their conference rooms to fill out paper work.

The Coast Guard took photos of the life preserver and put it into evidence.

TOTE Maritime confirmed the debris washing up ashore in the Bahamas is related to El Faro.

The Coast Guard said the partial life jacket is the first piece of life saving equipment believed to be from El Faro that's been collected in Jacksonville.

The Coast Guard sector in Jacksonville is working closely with the Coast Guard in Miami who's also collecting recovered lifesaving equipment.

The Coast Guard will work with NTSB officials who will ultimately determine whether it's in fact from El Faro.
