Action News Jax Investigates: Florida's Best and Brightest teacher bonus program

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An Action News Jax Investigation reveals Florida's Best and Brightest teacher bonus program appears to benefit teachers in more affluent schools.

In Jacksonville, the school district uses bonuses to get and keep teachers in its 31 lowest performing schools.

Dr. Nikolai Vitti's response to questions from Action News Jax Paige Kelton about the best and brightest bonus:

"This is a state mandate that we have the duty to implement and comply with. We respect the legislature's attempt to increase teacher salaries and find ways to recruit strong college students to the teaching profession. This is a state legislature initiative not a district initiative. As district, we have used cutting edge incentives (20K and 17K) bonuses that recruit and retain teachers in our most struggling schools. However, this is based on actual student performance, which we believe is a stronger measure to determine performance pay."
