American Airlines flight forced to land in JAX

A flight that was headed to Charlotte on Thursday made an emergency landing in Jacksonville due to a mechanical issue, according to American Airlines.

American Airlines Flight 608 left Orlando at around 10:10 a.m. The flight was in South Georgia when it was forced to land at Jacksonville International Airport after a mechanical odor was reported in the cockpit.

The plane, an Airbus A321 with 126 passengers and six crew members, landed safely at 11:16 a.m.

"Our maintenance team is currently evaluating the aircraft. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience, and are working to get them to North Carolina as soon as possible," said American Airlines in a statement.

Passengers stuck in Jacksonville described the scene on board on the plane.

"I smelt smoke on the plane. It smelled like burnt plastic," passenger Heidie Mcdonald said. "It was a foul smell. You are hoping you land soon, because it's kind of scary and you're hoping nothing blows up."
