Another driver crashes into bushes near home on Wonderwood Drive

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. — Robert Hartenstine, who lives right off Wonderwood Drive in Atlantic Beach, didn't get the wake-up call he was hoping for yesterday morning.

"You hear an enormous bang. It woke me out of a dead sleep," explains Hartenstine, who lives right off Wonderwood Drive in Atlantic Beach.

Hartenstine and others say a driver had lost control of their car speeding down Wonderwood Drive, landing in what used to be a row of bushes.

"It was sometime in between 4 and 4:30 a.m. because I got up and I said, ‘What the heck was that?'"

Unfortunately, it's a scene many in the area have grown accustomed to.

"This seems to be a common occurrence. There's another hole here that happened in the past. We've had other wrecks, a sanitation truck that flipped a couple years back," explains Steven Walker, who also lives off Wonderwood Drive.

They say drivers just don't slow down while coming off the bridge onto Wonderwood Drive.

Action News Jax set out to see for ourselves and found that even during rush hour drivers were going 10 to 15 mph over the 45 mph speed limit.

Hartenstine says, "The traffic here is so fast, it's like a speedway."

"It's a problem because you've got cars literally almost in your back porch," adds Walker.

It's been a few too many close calls for Walker, which is why he's hoping something can be done to fix it.

"I think maybe one of those flashing yellow signs that says slow down or something just something to warn people."

We reached out to the Florida Highway Patrol for details on yesterday's crash and are still waiting on a response.
