Another teen charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of Jacksonville 14-year-old

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Another teen has been charged with Manslaughter in the death of 14 year-old Henry Atkins who was shot and killed in September.

Christian Ashley, who is also 14 years old, made his first appearance in court Saturday to face formal charges.

Police say Ashley was arrested at Jefferson Davis Middle School Friday and was booked on charges of Manslaughter and Tampering with Evidence in connection with the September 12th shooting that happened in the 4600 block of Ricker Road.

Henry is remembered as being a fun-loving young man.

“He was just everything,” said his mother, Jamie Toomer. “He was a good child.”

Henry, or "Little E" as he was called by family and friends, was often spotted cutting grass. That's how he earned his own money.

But tragically, the image left with so many is of a small casket carried by other young men with a boy lying inside.

“I'm hurt,” Toomer said. “It hurts, but I have to be strong for my other kids.”

Last month, JSO said Henry was with three other young people when he was shot behind an abandoned day care off Ricker Road.

Nearly a month went by with Toomer wanting one thing: "Justice for my baby," she said.

Friday, Toomer said it came when a JSO detective told the family a 14-year-old had been arrested in connection with Henry death.

“I'm glad an arrest is made because I feel like I have justice,” Toomer said.

Family members of both boys were in court Saturday.
