Attorneys file 'stand your ground' motion in retired JSO corrections officer's case

Attorneys have filed a "stand your ground" motion in the case of Irish Andrews.

Andrews, a retired Jacksonville Sheriff's Office corrections officer, is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

He is accused of shooting his wife multiple times on Sept. 10.

The "stand your ground" motion explains Andrews and his wife of 26 years got into an argument.

It says she allegedly, “had a coat hanger in her hand, and had her hand raised over her head as if she was going to stab the Defendant with it."

The motion also says Andrews “fired 4 indiscriminate shots towards the alleged victim in self-defense.”

Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson says the burden of proof under the "stand your ground" law ground is on the state.

“In a stand your ground case, you have to admit that you shot someone because you were protecting yourself," Carson said.

The motion document also says: "The alleged victim has apologized to the defendant through family members, and indicated she does not wish for him to be prosecuted."

According to the police report, the shooting happened in front of the couple's two teenage children and Andrews' wife was admitted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Andrews has since been released on a $250,000 bond, and has a GPS monitor.
