Authorities enact safety precautions ahead of Georgia-Florida game

Several safety precautions are now in place ahead of the much anticipated match-off this weekend.

In less than a week, thousands of fans will be flooding downtown Jacksonville for the Georgia-Florida game.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office continues looking for the suspect who shot six people, just blocks away from the stadium.

The Georgia-Florida rivalry game is one of the most anticipated football games of the year in Jacksonville, and fans come from all over the country.

“I’ve been coming since I was like 10 years old and we do it every year and have a great time,” Georgia fan, Renee Walker said.

But the drive-by shooting happened six days before the game, and some fans are concerned.

“It sounded like someone opening fire very rapidly and I was like, 'Wow, that’s not something we want to hear every day,'” Florida fan, Peter Wells said.

Wells is one of the many fans already in town for the game and he said he heard the shooting Sunday from the RV lot.

“It’s kind of scary, you know,” Wells said.

About 24 hours after the shooting, Sheriff Mike Williams announced that there will be more than 600 officers working on game day.

Wells said he already noticed more police presence in the area.

“They have had police parked in here and around the lot,” Wells said.

In addition to more officers, there will also be metal detectors outside the stadium.

“Just be aware of your surroundings,” Georgia fan, Todd Love said.

The shooting happened in Councilman Reggie Gaffney’s district and he said they are working hard to make sure people will be safe this weekend.

“We are going to bring this to an end,” Gaffney said.
