Baby abandoned in stranger's vehicle identified

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police have identified a baby left in a stranger's vehicle Saturday night, as well as the woman who left the baby in the vehicle.

The child was identified when the grandfather saw the child on TV and recognized her.

John Harrell, of the Florida Department of Children and Families, said the baby is currently in a foster home. She could be placed with relatives if background checks go through, but it will be up to a judge, Harrell said.

"Parents should never do this under any circumstances," Harrell said. "Call 211 to get connected with resources, such as therapy."

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the incident initially took place when a woman was walking in the 5000 block of San Juan Avenue with a baby possibly between 6 to 12 months old.

A witness was pulling into a driveway when the woman jumped into the passenger seat with the baby.

After a few moments the woman left the vehicle with the baby in the car and ran, said JSO.

Police said the child is safe and in good condition. JSO and DCF are still investigating the incident.
