Bartram Park murder suspect Wilford Chason: 8 things to know

1. Wilford Gerald Chason, 51, faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of his wife.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Chason reportedly told police he killed his wife inside his Bartram Park home.

2. JSO identified the woman found victim as Jennifer Herbert.

JSO said officers found her body in the home during the welfare check. JSO said they suspect foul play.

Information about how Herbert died has not been released by police.

3. OnStar received a call from Chason prior to deputies detaining him.

Police said OnStar received a call from a man driving south on I-95. Statements made during that phone call prompted OnStar to call local authorities in Flagler County, according to JSO.

Police said Flagler County deputies pulled over the vehicle and detained Chason.

4. Chason was detained and placed under a Baker Act hold after he claimed he had killed his wife, according to police.

Police said Flagler County deputies took Chason to the hospital and detained him there after he reportedly told them he killed his wife in Duval County.

Chason was put under a Baker Act at the hospital while Flagler County deputies contacted officers in Duval County to conduct a welfare check at the man's home in Bartram Park, according to JSO.

5. JSO performed a welfare check at the home in Bartram Park -- and found Herbert's body.

JSO said they got a call from Flagler County deputies on Monday requesting they check on the status of a man at a home on White Blossom Circle. That's when JSO found the body.

6. This is not the first time Chason has been arrested.

In 1999, Chason went to prison for unarmed robbery, attempted kidnapping and indecent assault of a child under 16, according to public documents.

7. Chason is a registered sex offender.

Chason is currently listed as a sex offender in the State of Florida in connection to the crimes he did time for in 1999.

8. One neighbor said he knew Chason was registered sex offender.

Neighbors said JSO came to their doors asking about Chason. Action News Jax spoke to a neighbor off-camera who said he was aware of Chason's sex offender status and -- as a father -- he kept his distance.
