Bartram Park residents want more police presence after car break-ins

Residence of a Jacksonville neighborhood are concerned after videos surface of what appear to be young people trying to open car doors overnight.

In the surveillance footage, you can see someone try to open one car. Sara Contreras owns that car.

“Oh, no," said Contreras. "What is going on here?!”

She was relieved her doors were locked. She says it's a nice place to live, but she isn't leaving anything to chance.

“I was so grateful that we saw it and now we can pay more attention,” she said.

We met another neighbor who had footage of a passerby trying to open her car door early Wednesday morning.

She only wanted to be identified as 'Marissa' and says this has happened before.

Marissa filed a police report after someone kicked in the rear window of her truck and made off with several items earlier this year.

She wants to see more law enforcement in the area.

“Definitely more patrolling of our complex in the night times and evening times, for sure," said Marissa.

A JSO crime map reveals 13 records of theft, stolen cars, and car break-ins within a mile over the last six months.

Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson says it’s a crime of opportunity – and it happens more frequently in the summer.

“Summertime, school is out, and unfortunately some kids find criminal things to do such as break into your cars or come into your home if your garage door is open,” Jefferson said.

Neighbors are taking their concerns to JSO.

They wrote a letter asking for a restored “...sense of security in the community [they’ve] invested [their] hard-earned money into...”

At this time -- they’re hoping the people in this video,  don’t come back.
