Breathing new life into Moncrief neighborhood where many say they've felt forgotten over the years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Breathing new life into a local neighborhood where many said they've felt forgotten over the years. A project to clean up and beautify Moncrief will begin this fall.

"The neighborhood has kind of went down from what it used to be 15-20 years ago," said chef John Cartel.

But Cartel brought his food truck to the Moncrief area about a year ago. He said he believes in his neighborhood.

"I grew up in this neighborhood, so it felt good to come back home," he said.

And he said it feels good to know the city is investigating in his community.

"It's going to bring back pride into the community, and it's going to show the community that Jacksonville really cares about them," said Councilman Sam Newby.

Councilmembers Newby and Ju'Coby Pittman are behind the $4.2 million beautification project, which was funded through the city budget. The work will stretch from 34th to 45th Streets. It will include trees, lighting, landscaping, maintenance, painting, safety improvements, and artwork.

"We have enough liquor stores, gaming facilities, we want to bring some positive change to that community," said Pittman.

Pittman said she wants to see more businesses move in, a grocery store as well as after school programs.

Neighbors said they are ready for change.

"It messes up the community when things just sit and rot, so good let them come," said Lydia Butler, a neighbor.

Cartel said he is moved by the community support.

"It will mean a lot, basically showing that they never forgot about us," said Cartel.

Another project, White Harvest Farm will begin in phase two – Newby said it will bring 20-40 jobs and healthy food options for families.
