City of Jacksonville employee accused of getting paid for false time reports

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A former City of Jacksonville employee is accused of hanging out at home instead of working while on the clock.

Action News Jax got exclusive video that shows former sanitation worker John Erwin in his city garbage truck.

Records show on 67 different occasions, Erwin’s on-board GPS and drive-cam video showed him at or near his home for extended time periods while on duty.

The city paid Erwin more than $3,700 in salary and overtime based on false time reports.

“It’s a sad shame and I’m certainly glad this guy was caught,” said taxpayer Cindy Graves.

Erwin sent an email to the Inspector General defending his honor as a Marine Corp. veteran.

He wrote any possible decline in his work performance was due to poor health and if he did violate any policies it was all a misunderstanding.

The city recently sent out a notice confirming changes in the solid waste department to prevent future incidents.
