City of Jacksonville looking into vandalism on Northbank Riverwalk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The city of Jacksonville is looking into the alleged vandalism on the Northbank Riverwalk.

Broken boards, shattered lights, benches seemingly picked up and thrown in the river. The damage goes on for at least a half a mile.

Action News Jax walked the Northbank Riverwalk from an area near the Fuller Warren Bridge to the YMCA and saw damage along the way.

Virtually every light was busted. A man who walks it every day told Action News Jax that he counted 19 of lights broken.

Some of the benches appear to have been picked up and thrown in the water and the boards lining the bridge look like they were kicked out, some of them falling into the river.

City officials said they are aware of the damage and said the parks department is working to address it. Officials didn't know when the the damage was inflicted, but people around the area said they started noticing it in the last day or so.

Charles Barth, who rides his bike in the area, had his camera rolling when he and a good Samaritan retrieved a bench from the water. He said most of the benches were too far out for them to reach safely. Barth said he hopes whoever is responsible is caught.
