City to fix hole near Westside DCPS bus stop in the next four weeks

Action News Jax is pushing for answers about what’s being done about a hole near a Duval County Public Schools bus stop.

Action News Jax reporter Courtney Cole learned the city of Jacksonville currently has a contractor ready to address this particular cave-in, but it will take at least a month to be fixed.

A concerned parent sent an email to the Action News Jax newsroom on Wednesday.

He said there's a dangerous hole at the corner of Shindler Drive and Taurus Circle.

He's concerned for the safety of the kids who have to catch the bus at that location.

"Kids can move the barricades, they can go around barricades. They’re kids you know?!" said Kimberly Barker a mother of three who lives around the corner from the hole.

"I really don’t like for them to go past the house because of it. There’s all kinds of kids out here, so it’s really concerning,” Barker told Action News Jax.

Another man who lives in the area told Action News Jax the hole, which appears to be about 2 feet deep, has been there for at least the last seven months.

"I just feel it’s not safe. It’s just as dangerous for adults as it is for kids,” said Clifford Bellamy. He’s lived in the neighborhood for two years.

The parent who reached out to Action News Jax said the city placed orange and white barricades there after he contacted them in August and September.

Cole reached out to city as well.

In an email, Tia Ford, the spokeswoman for the city of Jacksonville said, in part:

"The City Public Works department is aware of the issue which has been investigated and prepared for issuance for a contractor to repair."

Ford said she can also talk to Public Works to let them know there are still some concerns so that they can consider additional safety options.
