Clay County Sheriff's Office cleaning up the streets

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The Clay County Sheriff's Office is in the middle of a drug sweep operation throughout the county, and it led to a potential scare in one neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies and members of the Orange Park Police Department surrounded a house where authorities thought a man was holed up inside.

The home is on Newport Drive, just southwest of Wells Road and Park Avenue.

Authorities discovered the man was not inside the home, and they left the neighborhood around 5:25 p.m., according to the Orange Park Police Department.

The situation, according to Clay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Mary Justino, is in connection with a drug sweep operation that's been underway for several days.

Investigators are serving drug-related warrants to people, some with violent criminal backgrounds, according to Justino.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office plans to release more information about the drug sweep at a news conference Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
