Clay man shot after beating estranged wife's boyfriend with bat, lighting fire to house

A man was arrested for attempted murder, arson and other charges after he beat his estranged wife's boyfriend with a bat and tried to light their house on fire.

Clay County deputies said Larry "Todd" Prevatt also bit his estranged wife on the arm when she tried to make him stop beating her boyfriend with a bat.

Prevatt, 47, and his wife filed for divorce in January, when she began living with her boyfriend.

She was in the garage doing laundry when Prevatt violated an injunction for protection and came to their house.

She walked into the house and saw Prevatt beating her boyfriend. She got the bat away from Prevatt but he then choked her boyfriend while he was on the floor of the kitchen.

Prevatt left the house after his estranged wife hit him with a cooking pot.

He came back inside with a gas can and starting pouring gasoline in the garage.

Prevatt lit the gasoline on fire and his estranged wife's boyfriend shot him in the leg with a shotgun to try to get him to stop.

Prevatt lit a second fire near the air conditioning unit in the back corner of the garage.

Deputies found Prevatt and the boyfriend laying in the yard 12 feet away from each other. Deputies said they were both completely exhausted and severely injured.

Prevatt's estranged wife put out the flames with a garden hose. Both men were taken to UF Health Jacksonville with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries.

Prevatt was charged with attempted murder, arson, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, armed burglary, domestic battery and violating an injunction for protection.
