Columbia County shooting suspect turns himself in

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said a man wanted in relation to shooting a security guard at the Elks Lodge in Lake City early Saturday morning turned himself into authorities late Wednesday evening.

Officers learned an argument between two unknown females and a single male, Robert Church, 29, began inside the Elks Lodge at closing.

Police say the on-site security guard attempted to separate the parties involved and escort them outside.

Once outside, Church fell to the ground during a struggle.

Church then reportedly went to a vehicle in the parking lot, retrieved a handgun and returned.  He shot the security guard once and fled the area.

The security guard was transported to UF Health Gainesville.

The bullet that passed through the guard struck a female bystander and she was taken by her husband to Lake Shore Hospital where she was later transferred to UF Health Gainesville. Both victims were out of the hospital as of late Wednesday night.

Church was booked on no bond into the Columbia County Detention Facility on charges of discharging a firearm in public, felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated battery.
