'Keep off dunes' as Jacksonville Beach access points get repaired after Hurricane Matthew

The city of Jacksonville Beach said more beach access points are opening up, but new video shows one of about two dozen points that remain closed since Hurricane Matthew.

Action News Jax first started looking into the problems four weeks ago, when neighbors complained that people were being forced to walk on the sensitive dunes to get to the oceanfront.

We reached out to city leaders, who say they’re more than halfway done fixing the walkovers.

Trish Roberts, deputy city manager of Jacksonville Beach, said there are 26 access points now open. One is being repaired and there are 22 that still need repairs.

Beachgoer Chloe Gladys said she hopes they're fixed soon

"It would be more frustrating whenever it gets busy," Gladys said.

We also saw signs next to closed walkways, saying "Keep off dunes.”

We asked how people should get onto the beach. Roberts is asking that people use open walkovers as much as possible to preserve the dunes that are still on the beach.
