Crash report numbers reveal dangers of Jacksonville road

An Action News Jax investigation is revealing how many crashes have happened on a local street in the past year.

This is the third time in the past three months that Action News Jax has been out to Cortez Road talking to concerned neighbors about dangerous road conditions.

From Beach Boulevard to Atlantic Boulevard, Cortez Road stretches nearly 3 miles.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, in the past year they have responded to 591 crashes within a 1-mile radius of the 2000 block of Cortez Road.

Lindsay Webb lives on the street, and she said she was almost hit pulling out of her driveway when two cars came speeding around the corner.

"Every single light on this road was exploding and I turn to my left and there's a white car wrapped around that pole right there," Webb said.

Webb said her dog even had a close call with speeders.

"People are driving really fast all the time. My dog has been hit by a car running out the door," Webb said.

The speed limit on Cortez Road is 30 mph with a suggested speed of 20 mph around the curves.

"I've seen people just trample right over it because they are going too fast," Webb said. "They can't slowdown."

Back in July, a city spokesperson said they were aware of the concerns and were working on traffic-related issues in the area.

Since then, the city put up a sign warning drivers of a stop sign ahead, but Webb said that’s not enough.

"They need to do something around this curve or maybe put a light," Webb said.

Webb said she has seen more officers patrolling the area in the past month.
