Crime on the rise in Eagle Landing neighborhood in Clay County

New numbers from the Clay County Sheriff's Office show that Eagle Landing has seen 40 percent more calls for burglaries this year-to-date than the same period last year.

This comes one day after Action News Jax told you calls for service regarding many crimes have risen for all of Oakleaf.

Since July 20, 2015, deputies said Eagle Landing has seen only one stolen vehicle call. CCSO said it came Saturday, when a man reported his BMW stolen.

Neighbors said two men later posed with it in a picture on Instagram. The neighbors then shared screenshots of the post on Facebook.

Action News Jax blurred the faces of the men in the picture because they haven’t been charged with a crime.

Christie Jenemabi of Eagle Landing believes she saw the suspect in the neighborhood. She said what was an uncomfortable encounter led to her calling the police.

“The policeman showed me the picture on his computer and that was the driver of the Cadillac that was in my driveway,” Jenemabi said. “The passenger was the one that's on the picture on Facebook next to the car that was stolen in the neighborhood recently.”

Tuesday, Action News Jax showed surveillance video of a group of men trying to burglarize cars a few miles away on Southland Lane.

“It's concerning,” said Eagle Landing resident Laurie Fowler. “In the three years that I've lived here, it's been on an increase.”

Fowler is starting a neighborhood watch program.

“We need to do something, be proactive rather than waiting for it to come to us,” Fowler said.
