Glynn County community meeting: Crime on the rise in Glynn County for first time in 10 years

For the first time in 10 years, the Glynn County police chief said his officers are seeing a rise in crime.

On Tuesday night, parents and other members of the community came together to talk about the issue and get answers from local law enforcement.

This meeting happened after several recent shootings.

The event was hosted by the Glynn County Police Department.

Chief Matthew Doering said the goal of the meeting was to make residents "aware of what’s going on in their neighborhood so they can be aware of it and they can do their part and we can all work better together.”

A quick scroll through the Police Department’s Facebook page shows some of the recent crimes in the area, including a violent home invasion in which police say a man attacked a 79-year-old woman. In February, a woman was shot in the face and a man was found dead inside a mobile home park. And in April, a shooting that injured three people took place outside the Glynn Place Mall.

"I wanted to come and learn all that I could," neighbor Valene McGrath said.

Doering said a large part of the increase is the result of a rise in property thefts, most of which he said have been committed by the same people.

“Of those hundreds (of) car burglaries we’ve had this year… one guy we know did 47, almost half of them and we’re sure he did more,” Doering said.

Still, some neighbors said they all need to work together to address the issue.

"Better to be involved than not," McGrath said.
