Data breach at Jacksonville company bigger than thought

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A data breach involving a Jacksonville company is much bigger than first thought.

All 1,362 Landstar employees were affected in the data breach.

Action News Jax reported in early April that thieves managed to get tax return information by pretending to be a trustworthy source.

Action News Jax's news partners at the Jacksonville Business Journal said a memo from Landstar's CEO showed the company was breached twice and every employee's information was at risk.

The data was given out on two occasions: Feb. 24 and March 18. The breach reportedly happened when a Landstar employee was emailed by someone pretending to work for the company. The employee then responded by attaching copies of all 2015 W2s and T4s, the Canadian equivalent.

According to reports, information for 1,362 employees were given out.

The company has contacted federal law enforcement and the internal revenue service and Canada revenue service.

A person familiar with the incident said in addition to fraudulent tax returns being filed, employees have had credit cards opened in their names and have had their banking accounts and 401(k) accounts accessed.
