Duval school board told not to comment about district's transgender bathroom policy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The school board held a work shop Monday and one topic that wasn't on the agenda but could be soon is the issue of transgender bathrooms.

School board member Jason Fischer opposes the district’s policy that allows students to use the bathroom and changing room that matches the gender they identify with.

Last week, he sent a letter to the Duval County School Board asking them to adopt his ‘Common Sense Policy.’

“It says if you are boy, biologically a boy, the boy’s bathroom and the boy’s locker room is the facility for you to use,” said Fischer. “The same as you, if you’re a girl.”

He wants his opinion on the issue heard but said he was told he cannot speak about the district's transgender bathroom controversy.

The district's legal counsel has told board members not to comment because of a lawsuit against the district's policy.

Gina Duncan is the transgender inclusion director with Equality Florida. She attended Monday's public comment session and said Duval should not back down.

"At a time when school boards across the state are working on policies to protect LGBT students, we need to stand firm on the policies in place," said Duncan.

The next school board meeting is June 13.
