DCPS responds to concerns after teen hit by car while walking to school bus stop

A local high school student is fighting for his life after he was hit by an SUV while walking to the bus stop.

FHP said the crash happened Tuesday around 6:40 a.m. on Dunn Avenue near Irma Rd.

Troopers said 15-year-old Michael Chaco was trying to cross the street to get to a school bus stop when he was struck by a Jeep driven by 29-year-old Jessica Boone.

The crash report said Boone immediately pulled over and stopped to help the teen.

The teenager was hit by the vehicle in front of his good friend, who said they walk to the school bus stop together every morning. He said he heard a loud “boom” and saw the victim in the air.

The victim suffered a fractured skull, bleeding in the brain, a broken hip and a broken leg.

Action News Jax reached out to the Duval County School District to see if it would reevaluate school bus stops that are not located in or near crosswalks.

A spokesperson said there are school bus stops on both sides of the road so students don’t have to cross the street. However, it might require the student to walk a longer distance.

The spokesperson said DCPS is reviewing the incident to see what, if anything, can be changed or updated on the school district’s end.

However, at this time, the school district said it doesn’t appear the school bus stop location played a factor.
