Delegates say DNC highlights diversity of Hillary Clinton supporters

President Barack Obama will speak tonight at the Democratic National Convention along with Hillary Clinton's running mate Senator Tim Kaine.

Democrats at DNC tell Action News Jax’s Samantha Manning that they feel this convention so far has highlighted diversity within the party, from the speakers on stage to the delegates and people walking the hallways.

Democrats said the many faces of support make Clinton stand apart from Donald Trump.

They said the message of acceptance for all people will make the difference for voters in November.

"We need to make sure we have a voice," Monica DePaul, a Duval County Delegate, said.

She told Action News Jax that despite a pledge from Donald Trump at the RNC last week to protect the LGBTQ community from violence, she believes Clinton is the only candidate who will support her rights.

"I have a feeling that if a bathroom bill that would force me into a men's room were on Trump's desk, that he would sign it,” DePaul said.

A number of delegates said it's the comments they view as divisive that they've heard from Donald Trump during this campaign that leave them worried about a Trump presidency.

"The anxiety is very, very high," said Mike Saifie, a delegate from San Bernardino, California.

Saifie said he is a delegate of Muslim faith from the city where a deadly mass shooting linked to terrorism took place in December.

It was after that shooting that Donald Trump called for a shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.

"I am an example that they have rejected, the people of San Bernardino have rejected his hate," Saifie said.

At the RNC last week, republican delegates told Action News Jax that they also feel they had a diverse group of speakers including women, minorities and members of the LGBTQ community.
