Deputies investigating possible drowning in Amelia Island

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Nassau County Sheriff's Office deputies are on the scene of a possible drowning at the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island in Nassau County.

Two people pulled a man's body out of the water at the Scott Road beach access in Amelia Island around 6 p.m., then called 911. The man, who appeared to be in his 40s, washed ashore wearing a shirt, underwear and socks, said Nassau Sheriff Bill Leeper.

Leeper said investigators are checking with local hotels and resorts to see if anyone is unaccounted for and are also checking missing persons reports in Nassau and surrounding counties.

NCSO is currently investigating. The Coast Guard was called at 6:07 p.m. to assist after it was notified by NCSO that the body had washed ashore.

Anthony Soto with the Coast Guard said their assistance consisted of checking to see if they had any distress call related to the incident, and they did not.

Leeper said investigators are waiting on the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the man's cause of death.
