Dog recovering from injuries consistent with dogfighting

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — At most, Bellatrix is 3 years old but she’s already had a few litters, is underweight and her face has been cut so badly some of her wounds haven't healed.

Christina Sutherin with Clay County Animal Care & Control said at first it was thought that the dog had been shot.

“It was actually wounds that were consistent with dogfighting,” Sutherin said.

Bellatrix now has a bandage on her nose and stitches along her forehead.

Her injury was so deep you could actually see her bone.

“Thankfully it was a good Samaritan. Most people wouldn't have put a dog that looks like her in their car and was nice enough to stop and notify us,” said Sutherin.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office now has an open investigation into the case.

Pit Sisters' founder Jen Deane stepped in to help with her nonprofit and has offered more than just medical care for Bellatrix.

“We have collected $3,000 so far and we are offering a reward to anyone who has information leading to the arrest,” said Deane.

Deane said she’d like to raise $5,000. According to Deane, if the person responsible isn’t caught, the abuse could escalate.

“Studies have shown that people who will abuse animals are very likely to abuse children too,” Deane said.

Bellatrix is expected to make a full recovery.

Pit Sisters will also work with her on any behavioral issues she may have as a result of the abuse.

Bellatrix will eventually receive laser therapy at the Clay Humane Society, Friends of Clay County Animals will pay for her care. Then Julington Creek Animal Hospital will sponsor the rest of her care.
