Dogfighting case, conditions at Putnam animal control spark protest

A dogfighting bust with no arrests and claims that animals are being mistreated while in the Putnam County's care were the topics of a Saturday morning protest.

Roxanne Weeks said she believes the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is not doing its due diligence in prosecuting those involved in a dog fighting ring that was busted in December.

Action News Jax took her concerns to PCSO Captain Joseph Wells.

He said the investigation is bigger than Weeks thinks.

He said it involves several task forces, all of which are still gathering evidence.

“The fact that the possibility that this dog fight that we had in Putnam County may be intertwined with dog fighting operations in other counties,” Wells said.

Wells said arrests will be coming soon.

Another issue protesters addressed is conditions at the animal control facility

Weeks helped put together a 72-page document that asked for the state attorney to investigate their complaints.

Wells said animal control used to be under the control of the sheriff but is not anymore.

This investigation found the shelter is running in good condition.
