A driver died while fleeing from police following a hit-and-run early Saturday, Fernandina Beach police said.

Police said they received a call shortly after midnight about a 205 Chevy Silverado pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run incident that happened at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club.

An officer identified and pursued the vehicle, which was driven by 40-year-old Gary Denmark, as it traveled eastbound on Wilder Boulevard. The speed of the brief chase didn't exceed 70 mph, police said.

The traffic report said the truck went out of control during the chase and ran off the roadway and onto the left shoulder. As the vehicle continued to travel east, it ran off the roadway and onto the right shoulder, striking a culvert.

The report said the vehicle then overturned and came to rest on its roof. Police said Denmark was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the vehicle was taken to UF Health in Jacksonville.

The Police Department said it is reviewing the officer's actions, which it said appears to have been appropriate.
