Jordan Davis’ family and friends call for cease fire on victim’s birthday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A local teen who was shot and killed over loud music seven years ago is being remembered on what would have been his 25th birthday.

Jordan Davis’ father, Ron Davis, reflected on what was lost.

“Sometimes you’re sad that he’s not here, but through that sadness and through that pain I celebrate,” Ron Davis said.

Ron Davis is now teaming up with pastor John Guns and parents who have lost children to gun violence to call for a ceasefire on the second weekend in March.

“The community has to drive it, and the community has to be committed to making it happen,” Guns said.

Police say Jordan Davis was shot and killed at the Gate gas station at the intersection of Baymeadows Road and Southside Boulevard after an argument over loud music.

A plaque hangs outside the gas station as a memorial to Jordan Davis.

His father says he was an amazing young man with a bright future ahead.

This November will mark eight years since Jordan Davis was killed. His death sparked national attention.

Action News Jax told you last December when Michael Dunn, who was convicted in 2014 for killing Jordan Davis, filed a notice to appeal.

It’s the first step in asking the Florida state Supreme Court to take up this case.

“He has nothing better to do every day but to try to fill out papers and try to get this overturned, so I don’t blame him for that,” Ron Davis said.

Meantime, Latasha Hobbs said she knows what it feels like to lose a son to gun violence.

“I have to be here because love is our only survival. We have to be there for each other,” Hobbs said.

Since Jordan Davis’ death, his mother was elected to Congress in Georgia on a gun control platform.

His father says his death will always be associated with loud music. But he says once a year, it’s a tribute to his life.
