Riverside: Deadly shooting near popular bars and restaurants, police say

FEB. 17 UPDATE: Family told Action News Jax the man killed early Sunday morning in the Riverside area is Blake Hendrix, 23.

  • Blake Hendrix was killed Sunday morning in the Riverside area on King Street.
  • He was found shot to death behind the Burger King.
  • People who work in the area said a fight broke out at a bar before the shooting happened.
  • Family said he was in trade school on track to graduate this year.
  • He had perfect attendance while in High School and is from Nassau County.
  • Family described Hendrix as having a big heart, who loved to sing and make people laugh.
  • The shooting happened near where Daniel Rowe was killed behind the Blind Rabbit in 2015

ORIGINAL STORY:

Someone was shot and killed in the King Street District near Riverside early Sunday morning, according to police.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office had a large area of King Street near Post blocked off beginning at 2 a.m.

Police said two off-duty officers were in the area when they heard gunshots.

People directed them toward the back of the Burger King, where they found a person dead in the road.

Several people told Action News Jax Brittney Donovan they heard the gunshots as they were leaving restaurants and bars on King.

Police said they are talking with witnesses and working to learn what led to the shooting.
