Eatery voluntarily closed when health inspectors found no running water

Popeyes, Neptune Beach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A health inspector visited Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits on Atlantic Boulevard in Neptune Beach.

The inspector found that the restaurant didn't have running water. The manager acknowledged the violations, and voluntarily closed the restaurant. The inspector also found a black, mold-like substance on the ice.

Action News Jax visited the Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits and asked to speak with the manager who didn't want to speak on camera. The manager did release a statement:

"The complex experienced a water main break, which lowered the water pressure. When the health inspector arrived, they knew they had to close. When it was fixed the following day, they were allowed to reopen after a follow-up inspection."

Candy Apple Café in downtown Jacksonville received violations from a health inspector. The inspector saw four expired food items, the inspector issued a stop sale on veal stock and discovered the dish machine sanitizer was too weak to clean. The Candy Apple Cafe was not ordered to temporarily shut down and no follow-up inspection was needed.

"In the original online version of this week's restaurant report, Action News Jax said the Candy Apple Café downtown had been temporarily shut down for violations. That is not the case, the Candy Apple Café was not shut down. We apologize for our error."

At Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza in Lake City, a health inspector found 13 live roaches, roach droppings in the dish area and raw steak held over cooked onions in the fridge. It was temporarily shut down and reopened after two follow-up inspections.
