Express lane signage erected on I-295

The express lanes on I-295 are starting to take shape.

Signage for the toll road was raised this week around the Old St. Augustine exit. The express lane will allow drivers to travel faster to Orange Park — for a fee.

Work on the express lanes began in May 2016 and has two new 12-foot travel lanes in each direction. Drivers can use the express lane for a fee.

The Florida Department of Transportation says the toll rate for express lanes will vary depending on the amount of traffic. Generally, fewer cars using the lanes means a less expensive toll. Message signs will show the current toll rate.

Due to electronic tolling, cars are not required to stop to pay the toll, FDOT says.
