Family of teen run over by city truck in Atlantic Beach suing city

The family of a local teenager who was run over by a city truck on Atlantic Beach in May 2016 is suing the city.

The family said 14-year-old Jade Shaw suffered severe injuries from the truck while she was sunbathing with a friend. Action News Jax obtained video from after the incident when city park ranger, Timothy Thompson,  was emptying garbage cans and didn't see Jade and a friend lying in the sand.

"No one deserves this, much less a teenager or a child. I believe it's preventable," said Isabella Queniat, Jade's mother.

Jade was stuck underneath the truck and suffered third-degree burns from the heat of the truck. She now has scars over 30 percent of her body.

"She really needed help day and night. I either had to sleep with a baby monitor or with her, she was immobilized for a while, with her arm up in a certain position," Queniat said.

Attorney Curt Pajcic is representing the family. There's a $300,000 cap on claims against governments in Florida, and he said her medical bills are much higher, but there is a possible legal remedy by pursuing a claims bill through the Legislature.

We reached out to the city of Atlantic Beach and are waiting to hear back. As for the driver, his license was suspended for three months and he paid more than $600 in fines and court costs.
