Family says mother, boyfriend, in critical condition after Westside shooting that left 3 dead

Action News Jax has learned Jessica Carter, mother of a young girl, and her boyfriend, were the two surviving victims of Saturday morning's shooting that left three others dead.

JSO says Ryan Chesser, 33, and Eric Bryant, 32, were shot and killed by Jacoby King, 26. King then turned the gun on himself.

Carter’s grandmother, Anna Kopecinski, tells us she and her boyfriend are in critical condition at UF Health.

“It’s sad, it’s just very sad,” said Kopecinski. “But I’m glad my granddaughter will survive, and hopefully her boyfriend will survive also.”

Kopecinski tells Action News Jax she knew Chesser, who she says was Jessica’s roommate at the house on Brian Lakes Drive.

“You can’t imagine until it happens to you, you know, what somebody feels,” said Kopecinski. “I feel bad enough, but he wasn’t my child, so his mother and father must be devastated.”

Kopecinski tells Action News Jax Bryant was in town to celebrate Ryan’s recent birthday on January 16th.

She says Carter has a young daughter, who was with Carter’s friend at the time of the shooting.

“You hear so much on TV, and just to think that she survived, you know, and she was just an innocent party, just happened to be at her home,” she said.

Chesser’s family tells Action News Jax they’re still processing what happened. JSO says this is an ongoing investigation. We’re calling JSO to learn if there are new developments in this case.
