FBI meets with Jacksonville's Jewish community about recent threats to schools, synagogues

FBI leaders met with the Jacksonville Jewish community Tuesday night to talk about recent threats and attacks on Jewish schools and synagogues, and how they are doing everything they can to stop them.

“It’s really a horrendous situation that we have when I can’t attend my synagogue without looking over my shoulder,” Marty Kaufman said.

That reason alone has Kaufman and other Jewish people concerned.

“This is America. This is 2017, I thought we have come past this racism, all of the any of the isims. I thought we have moved past that before I was born,” Rabbi Howard Tilman said.

Tilman said things have not gotten better. Bomb threats were made at the Jewish Community Alliance in San  Jose in January and at other Jewish centers across the past several months.

Two threats happened in Central Florida and in St. Louis, a man was arrested in connection with at least eight threats against Jewish centers across the U.S.

“They’re all happening, at the same time, and very similar time frames. One would assume that a group or someone directed is probably doing that,” said Charles Spencer, with FBI.

People in Jacksonville say these attacks won’t scare them away.

“Cowards that would hide behind a mask of hate, they’re afraid to confront someone one on one,” Tilman said.

The FBI is asking everyone if you see something, say something and call 1-855-FLA-SAFE.
