FHP: 2 Jacksonville teens killed in collision in Yulee

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol said two teenagers died Wednesday night in a crash on U.S. 17 in Yulee.

FHP said the crash happened around 7 p.m. just north of the Nassau-Duval county line.

FHP said weather was a factor in the crash.

A blue Nissan Sentra was headed south, went off the road and overcorrected when a car headed north then T-boned the other car.

Two boys who were in a Nissan Sentra were confirmed dead at the scene; one 76-year-old man traveling in a Kia Soul was taken to UF Health Jacksonville and is expected to be OK.

The victims have been identified by officials as Kay Deraway IV, 16, of Jacksonville and Travis Lighthall, 15, of Jacksonville.

The road was shut down for nearly three hours due to the crash.

FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan said U.S. 17 in that area has a lot of areas that aren't lit.

"It can be dangerous at times, especially when you start incorporating inclement weather, some possible driver distractions or anything of that nature," Bryan said.

Everyone involved in the crash wore seatbelts, troopers said.
