Flags at half staff as community mourns Putnam deputy

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — Flags flew at half staff in Putnam Sunday for a deputy who lost her life after she fell overboard during a boating accident in the St. Johns River.

Deputy Brandee Smith, 35, was known as "Momma Bear" at the sheriff's office because she embraced everyone she came across with the same unconditional support and love she showed her family.

Smith's body was found at the bottom of the river after a dozen agencies searched by land, sea and air for more than 24 hours.

Capt. Joseph Wells with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Smith was full of empathy, and was the only one that could console a child after she was kidnapped by one of her parents.

“What amazed me the most was that she was the only person that could console and comfort that child,” said Wells.

Smith's friends described her as a sincere, genuine person and mother who got into law enforcement to make a difference.

Smith's best friend Marisa Sapp said their sons were best friends.

Smith's compassion helped Sapp get through losing her son in an ATV accident.

Sapp said even some of the people Smith arrested during her time with the sheriff's office are reaching out to give their condolences.

Smith's empathy, direction and lectures helped them get on the right path, Sapp said.

Anyone who wishes to donate to Smith's family with a monetary or non-monetary donation can do so by visiting the website for the Putnam County Ten-24 Foundation and all funds will be earmarked for Smith's family. Here is more information from the PCSO Facebook page:
