Flames in Nassau County wildfire 85 percent contained

The massive wildfire that ripped through parts of Nassau County is now 85 percent contained.

Officials said the fire destroyed homes and 700 acres of land.

Firefighters continued to spray water over several hot spots that were still burning on Friday night with hopes of getting the fire completely contained.

Howard Cory said he was inside his home when the fire started.

“I finally got up and looked at the back window, and I noticed a wall of fire coming at me," Cory said. "I said, 'Holy Moses.'”

Cory said in just two minutes the flames were inches from his home.

“It was just fear that I was going to lose everything," Cory said. "I don’t have much here, but I worked all my life to get it."

Cory said his pump house and a wash shed burned in the fire.

Cory said somehow his home was spared, but he did lose something very dear to him.

“I couldn’t get my cat out," Cory said. "My girlfriend, she passed away recently, and she gave me the cat."

Cory said despite the damage outside, he feels blessed.

“I feel blessed. I still have my trailer. That’s all I can say, is that I’m blessed," he said.
