Florida roads congested ahead of Hurricane Irma

The roads across Florida have been congested the last few days, but not Friday in South Florida.

Lights filled Interstate 95 northbound Friday night as thousands of people were leaving Florida, to get away from Hurricane Irma. “It looks like, it’s coming right up the middle of the state,” said Gerard Somers from Apopka, Florida.

Irma is expected to cause a lot of damage. State leaders say Irma is bigger than Hurricane Andrew and could cause more damage than Hurricane Matthew did last year, so they are asking everyone to not underestimate this storm.

Thousands of drivers packed both Interstate 95 and 75; other evacuees hit the airport to get out of town. “I actually was planning on staying here, but there is no water, there’s not going to be any electric supply out here,” said Amitesh Agarwal.

“I had a sister went through the hurricane in Houston, so it kind of opened my eyes up,” said James McDaniel.

Jacksonville International Airport is stopping all commercial flights Saturday at 7 p.m. ahead of Irma’s anticipated impact.
