Freeze Warning in effect for Jacksonville area this weekend

LATEST WEATHER: Free First Alert weather app (rain, severe weather alerts)

It’s the coldest air of the year so far, and it’s headed our way.

All of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are under a Freeze Watch Saturday night and into early Sunday.

Rain — and even a few thunderstorms — will precede the cold Friday night and bring widespread rainfall of nearly an inch.

Temperatures by early Sunday morning will fall into the 20s north and west of Jacksonville with wind chills in the teens. Metro Jacksonville will see temps in the lower 30s but with wind chills in the 20s.

Temperatures in southeast Georgia, mainly Ware County, could see temperatures as low as 25 degrees.

Saturday will be windy, wet and cold with temperatures staying in the upper 40s all day. Freezing temperatures are expected early Sunday and Monday with afternoon highs in the 40s and 50s.

Ready for spring-like temperatures? Temperatures will climb back to the 70s by the middle of the week.

The Jacksonville area will be spared much of the winter storm that is expected to hamper travel in the Southeastern United States.

To recap:

1. Heavy rain, then the coldest air of the season for the Jacksonville area
2. Freeze watch
for Jacksonville areas south on Saturday night and early Sunday, with a hard freeze watch north and west of Jacksonville
5. Temperatures Saturday will be in the upper 40s, upper 50s and then slowly dropping into the 40s by afternoon
6. The lows Saturday night will fall to near 30 degrees along the I-95 corridor and 32-35 at the beaches

7. Highs only in the 40s Sunday despite plenty of sun
8. There is no
snow in our First Alert Forecast. There's a chance a flurry mixed with a sprinkle could be seen near a coastal area late Sunday, but it looks too dry for such at this point
