Grandfather recalls the moments bullets came flying through his Westside Jacksonville home

A family of five was inside their home when stray bullets started flying through the walls Tuesday night.

It happened on Fairglade Drive South. The bullets just missed the family, including two little kids.

Bullet holes and broken glass are the aftermath of someone firing a gun into a Westside home.

“I don’t know how many shots, but it seemed like five or six shots at least,” said George Whitaker.

Action News Jax spoke exclusively with Whitaker, Sr about the shooting. He said it all happened with a gunfight from a gasstation across the street. Whitaker said although he heard multiple shots, two bullets flew into his home.

“I heard the 'BOOM,' and then another one, and then I heard the glass shatter before I could get up and take off through there. It was scary. I was a little jittery. I was just scared to death that they were going to keep shooting. I didn’t know if they were going to stop. I was afraid to go out,” said Whitaker.

Whitaker did make sure his family, including his two granddaughters, were safe.

“My two granddaughters, they were in the back room, their mother and my son, he was in the bathroom,” said Whitaker.

Whitaker was the closest one to the bullet stuck in his couch.

“I normally sit somewhere on this couch when I get ready to watch TV at night,” said Whitaker.

Whitaker said he’s glad everyone is safe, but things could have been worse.

“They were just randomly shooting, ain’t no telling how many innocent people were,” said Whitaker.
