Guns, ammunition found in stolen car abandoned in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Two guns and ammunition were found inside a stolen car that was found abandoned in a St. Augustine neighborhood on Tuesday.

Neighbors said the car was parked in their St. Augustine neighborhood for several days, until one neighbor got suspicious and called the sheriff’s office.

St. Johns County deputies showed up and told families living in the neighborhood that the car was reported stolen in Jacksonville.

Action News Jax Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson said the find was a good example of neighborhood watch.

"These weapons won’t go into the hands of the bad guys now," Jefferson said. "The bad guys took the car but they left the weapons.”

The car was reported stolen around 3 a.m. last Thursday in Jacksonville.

One of the guns found in the car was reported stolen on Friday about 50 miles away in Elkton.

The car, gun and other items were found in St. Augustine on Tuesday.

"They needed some type of concealment car to do their dirty work, so if someone gave a description of the car it's already stolen," Jefferson said. "So it's not connecting them to the particular car."

Neighbors said they're glad the guns were found and next time they see something suspicious, they'll call deputies sooner.
