Hoax call leads to SWAT situation on Wells Road, Orange Park police say

Police and a SWAT team in Clay County investigated in the area of Wells Road and Wells Landing Drive Thursday after receiving a call from a man threatening to kill.

In the 9:20 a.m. call to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, police said a man called saying he killed two people and was threatening to kill himself.

OPPD said  they contacted the homeowner, who wasn’t actually there at the time. That person quickly responded and gave them a key, and when law enforcement entered the home they didn’t find anyone inside.

Orange Park Police Chief Gary Goble said they believe this was a “swatting” incident, or where someone makes a hoax call to law enforcement, in order to provoke a large response on an unknowing person.

Police are working to learn who made the call.

The person responsible could face charges, according to Goble, because of the considerable resources that are deployed in a situation like this.
