Hurricane Irma erosion causes Ponte Vedra Beach road closure

A Ponte Vedra Beach road is closed for emergency repairs.

Hurricane Irma caused erosion under a small bridge on Roscoe Boulevard, prompting St. Johns County to temporarily close about a mile of the road for repairs between Landrum Lane and Canal Boulevard.

The bridge is just north of Landrum Lane.

St. Johns County government spokesman Michael Ryan said the initial phase that began on Thursday is about crews getting under the bridge and figuring out exactly how much damage was done.

By early next week, the county should have an estimate of how long drivers should expect the stretch of Roscoe Boulevard to be closed.

If the damage isn’t too bad, the closure will last a few weeks.

If crews find significant damage, the bridge may need to be replaced, which would take several months.

The road closure is right by Ocean Palms Elementary School and Alice B. Landrum Middle School.
Action News Jax noticed some traffic congestion at the beginning of the school day and at dismissal time on Thursday.

Families who live between the Roscoe Boulevard bridge and Canal Boulevard can get to their homes from North Roscoe Boulevard.

Families who live between the bridge and Landrum Lane can get to their homes from South Roscoe Boulevard.

All regular traffic is being detoured to Palm Valley Road.
