UPDATE: Hurricane Irma: Thousands in Jacksonville without power; millions more affected statewide

As Hurricane Irma bore down on Florida, the ActionNewsJax team has worked hard to make sure everyone in the community has the news they need to stay safe.

Power outages related to Hurricane Irma are affecting over 260,000 homes and businesses in the Jacksonville area, and over 3.7 million people across the state of Florida as of Monday morning.

According to JEA, 262,771 Jacksonville area customers were without power  on Monday morning, with other major Florida cities also being heavily impacted, with Florida Power and Light reporting 805,480  outages in Miami-Dade County alone.

Broward and Palm Beach counties were also hit hard, with 641,930 and 527,100 power outages, respectively, on Sunday afternoon.

JEA will begin restoring power to its customers as soon as it’s safe for their technicians to do so, according to their website.

“JEA generally restores power in the sequence that will result in returning service to the greatest number of customers as soon as possible,” their website says.
