Jacksonville City Council members elect first-term councilwoman over council veteran for president

Jacksonville City Council members elected a first-term councilwoman over a council veteran for its new president on Tuesday.

In an 11-8 vote, Anna Brosche beat out John Crescimbeni, who’s in his 17th year on the council.

“We have a lot of great momentum with all the mayor has done with the city in the two years that we’ve served together. And I want to make sure that we are spreading out and serving the community and touching all parts of Jacksonville,” said Brosche.

Brosche is chair of the Finance Committee.

Crescimbeni was serving as council vice president.

“Typically, the vice president, as long as they keep themselves out of trouble, they ascend to the council presidency. But that didn’t happen,” said Crescimbeni.

Crescimbeni blames party politics for his loss.

“This council hasn’t elected a Democratic council president since 1992. So that’s what I’ll put my cards down on,” said Crescimbeni.

The council elected Aaron Bowman to serve alongside Brosche as vice president.

Bowman beat out Scott Wilson 14-5 for the VP spot.

Bowman introduced the controversial Human Rights Ordinance bill this year, which passed in February.

Brosche replaces Lori Boyer as council president.

Brosche’s promotion comes with a raise. She will now make $58,800 a year.

All other council members make $44,100.
